mavis stevens

Mavis Stevens, a well known folk artist, was born in 1959 in Butler, Ga., but her first 9 years were spent in Americus, Ga. While living in Americus, at the age of 7 she was mesmerized by Eddie Martin a folk artist who visited Americus's popular fall festival , ahead of his time and an honest to goodness hippie. He wore his colorful dashiki, and she so wanted just to touch him. The next day, all the kids in school were talking about him and she wanted to be like him. And so she discovered my passion. Soon after, my mother and her friend started knitting. They let her play with some scraps of yarn and she created a beautiful afghan. The adults were stunned . It was during the time Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. So then she had my medium: yarn. One small stitch for a child, one giant leap into my future. She knitted, crocheted, embroidered everything for everybody. Then when she was 15 a cousin suggested she sign up for a festival. People gave her money for her work. That was it... She had her career! She feels she is called by a higher power to do what she does. Her work has taken her places and introduced her to people that are beyond any dreams she could have ever had. She is humbled to live such a wonderful life. Her life has taken many geographical turns that have landed her in Buford, Ga. She is very proud to be a part of the arts community here. She lives in a magic cottage with my dog and a bird... and a whole lot of yarn just waiting to tell someone's story!

dennis assayac

Dennis Stephan Assayac was born in Paris, France in 1955, where he was educated and received his formal art and music training. There he received intense tutoring from exquisite art professors from the famous Parisian Beaux-Art's School.. for how long??number of years. At the age of 15, Dennis began studying classical guitar with Master Faraill which he continued for the next five years. Intense private tutelage from Masters in art and music deeply influenced his lyrical style of painting and shows in the delicacy of his brush strokes. Mr. Assayac moved from France to the United States in 1971 where he completed his education in American schools. In his younger years he financed his education by playing classical guitar in a few New York French restaurants and lounges. Throughout these years he always worked on perfecting his own personal style. Mr. Assayac's artwork has been exhibited at shows and galleries in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami. He received commissions resulting in a series of valuable limited edition prints taken from his original oils. Dennis became a United States naturalized citizen in 1980 and made his home in Atlanta, Georgia. Although he passionately loves the United States for the freedom it stands for, he never forgot his roots. And you will always find those fine French attributes associated with every true French soul: The eye for esthetics, the passion for life, the appreciation of beauty, and taking the time to enjoy the simple things in life. His personal goal in art is: 'To portray mankind's struggle to achieve harmony between technology and spirituality.
